WHAT ARE DENTAL CROWNS AND WHY DO WE NEED THEM:
The truth of the matter is: a damaged or broken tooth has no natural way of repairing itself. Instead, its condition can only become worse if left untreated.
At Balaclava Dental Care, we routinely heal and repair damaged teeth by creating personalised, tooth-coloured crown or bridge which is designed to strengthen and protect the affected tooth. We take care and pride in our ability to achieve an aesthetic restoration which will allow it to blend in beautifully with your natural smile!
WHAT ARE CROWNS FOR TEETH?
Crown is a type of a dental restoration which, when cemented / bonded into place, fully cup over the portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.
Dental crowns normally encase the entire visible aspect of a tooth, becoming the tooth’s new outer surface. Dental crowns are an ideal way to rebuild and strengthen broken teeth, teeth weakened by decay or by large fillings. The crown will fit right over the remaining part of the tooth, making it stronger and giving it the shape and contour of a natural tooth.
WHY WOULD YOU NEED A CROWN?
- Your tooth may have been weakened by having a very large filling
- You may have discoloured teeth and would like to improve the appearance of your smile
- You may have had a root filling which will need a crown to protect it
- You may have had an accident and damaged or broken your tooth
- It may help hold a bridge or denture firmly in place
WHAT IS THE PROCESS?
On your first appointment the dentist will review your tooth and may take impressions of your upper and lower teeth with a soft gel-like material. This is to record the appearance the harmony of your teeth and the way in which your bite fits together when your jaws are closed.
In many cases a local anaesthetic will be administered to allow the dentist to shape your tooth. The tooth is shaped using specially designed diamond drills which allow the dentist to accurately shave the tooth down by no more than one to two millimetres. This process creates space for the new crown and enables it to fit snugly onto the tooth. At this stage a secondary more accurate impression is taken to ensure the measurements of the crown will be a perfect fit for your mouth. These impressions are then sent to a dental technician who will prepare the crown according to the specific clinical and aesthetic requests of the dentist. Before you leave, a temporary crown will be gently cemented onto your tooth to protect it until your real crown arrives.
At your next visit, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is placed over the tooth to check that the colour and fit is optimal. Once this has been ensured the dentist will permanently cement the crown onto your tooth. The overall finish will be that the functionality of the tooth is restored and the crown will look as though it is a natural tooth.
WHAT IS A DENTAL BRIDGE?
If a tooth is too damaged to save or you are missing a tooth then a dental bridge may be a good solution for you.
The purpose of a bridge is to replace one or more missing teeth. This will help you by improving chewing functionality, improving the appearance of your smile and preventing teeth from shifting and drifting. It is often used as an alternative to dental implants.
Dental bridges are in principal similar to crowns however they are designed to replace missing teeth by securely adhering to healthy neighbouring teeth.
The process of preparing a dental bridge is similar to preparing for a crown with a difference of having to prepare multiple teeth which will need to work together to achieve stability, durability, function and aesthetics.
