Routine, fast, reliable and inexpensive oral cancer screening test to promote early detection and improve quality of life.

Oral cancer rates are on the rise and the seriousness of this disease cannot be underestimated.

The most common risk factors for Oral malignancy is the use of tobacco and alcohol, furthermore international studies suggest that any person older than 40 is at a higher risk of developing oral cancer. However, statistical data suggests that over 25% of people diagnosed with oral cancer do not exhibit any of these high risk factors.
According to the American Cancer Society’s most recent estimates; each year over 37,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer.

As with any form of cancer, early detection is the most crucial factor in defeating this disease.
To address, reduce the incidence and promote early detection our practice is implementing an oral cancer screening protocol. This potentially life saving protocol is in line with our philosophy of providing the most advanced dental care available to our patients.

Previously we used to conduct a visual inspection of the oral cavity for signs and symptoms of malignancy however we felt that this commonly used method is not accurate enough in providing early detection.
Recently, our practice incorporated the Microlux/DL into our oral screening standard of care. We support the research that combining Microlux/DL along with a visual oral inspection improves our ability to identify suspicious areas at their earliest stages.

This simple screening procedure involves rinsing your mouth for 60 seconds with a disclosing solution followed by a close illuminated inspection of your oral tissues. This protocol will make oral malignancies become more visible in their early stages.
Once a suspicious lesion is discovered we may dye it using a dye with high affinity to acidic tissue components i.e areas of cell and DNA breakdown.

This early detection of pre-cancerous tissue can minimize or eliminate the potentially disfiguring effects of oral cancer and possibly save your life.
The Microlux/DL exam will be offered to all our patients annually.
This enhanced examination is recognized by the Australian Dental Association item number 054 however, it might not be covered by your health fund.
